Back in the 1970's, Sally & Jim Venerable of Huntley, Illinois were active field trialers and members of the GRCA Board of Directors (Sally was past President of GRCA). The Venerables opted to do a breeding between two kennel mates that they were training for field trial competition at the time. When they bred Nettles to Rocky one male pup stood out in the litter as a very precocious and personable little guy. At seven weeks of age, when one testicle had not yet descended, the Venerables opted to sell this pup as a pet and hunter.

Lew and Kathy Daniels were looking for just such a dog and they happily took the pup home naming him Wildfire of Riverview and calling him Sparky. Sparky was the perfect name as the pup was dark red and full of himself-he "sparkled". Editors note: His testicle dropped the following week.

The Daniels started doing obedience training with their new pup and also came out to the Venerables for some field training sessions. They competed in the local sanctioned trials that were popular in Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois during the winters and early spring. They soon became serious about the field trial game and traveled the Midwest trial circuit for several years achieving Sparky's Amateur Field Championship. Sparky was always an animated hard charging retriever on land and parted the water with his great splashing entry.

He won a Double Header (winning both the Open and Amateur Stake at the same trial), at the Buckeye Retriever Club in Ohio in April of 1982. He earned a spot in the GRCA Field Dog Hall of Fame by earning 34 All Age points, but he was 1 point short of achieving his Field Championship when he was retired. He also qualified for three Nationals.

During the winter months, when Lew was unable to train or compete in field trials, the Daniels entered Sparky in obedience trials and earned his CDX in December of 1980. Sparky was as animated in the obedience ring as he was in the field.

Sparky was a fun dog to watch and the pride and joy of the Daniels during his competitive years.
He sired two Field Champions: FC AFC Sunfire's XX Buckshot owned by Jim Morgan and FC AFC Mioak's Main Event (Rocky) originally owned by (Mickie Kendrigan) Strandberg, then T. Woodhouse and Jackie Mertens, then Grayson Kelley, then Kathy Morse. His most noted obedience offspring were OTCH Heelalong Cracklin' Sunfire TDX WC & OTCH Topbrass Super Charger WC. Lewis Daniels is listed as Crackle's breeder. Crackle was owned and trained by Karen Johnson. Bonnie Baker owned and loved Charger.
