Carol Lilenfeld of Flemington, New Jersey was Devil's breeder and original owner. Carol currently owns and competes with her black lab - FC AFC Candlewood's Lot of Zip. Carol had successfully campaigned Devils dam - Stony-brooks Fools Gold*** to 23 derby points and several Qualifying placements. She shipped her to California to be bred to AFC Yankee's Smoke'n Red Devil and kept Jersey Devil as her choice of the litter.
Carol did much of Devil's early puppy training and then sent him to Mike Lardy to finish his Basics. He was put through much of the program by Pat Burns, who worked for Mike at that time. Carol then sold Devil to Bob & Marge Meegan following The GRCA National Specialty in LaPeer, MI in 1985. He was 18 months old at the time and had just won the Derby. He went on to earn a spot on the National Derby list the following spring and spent the next six years alternating between professional trainers - Mike Lardy of Wisconsin and Bill Eckett of Kansas City, MO. Devil quickly earned his FC AFC titles. The Meegans also qualified and ran several National Amateurs with him.
Bob Meegan approached me about a co-ownership on Devil in the fall of 91. I readily agreed to it, as I had always admired Devil during his Derby career, but I owned Topbrass Windbreaker Zap at the time and could not afford to purchase Devil. I co-owned Devil with the Meegans and successfully campaigned him for several years. He was always a joy to train and run. We were finalists at the 1992 National Amateur in Batavia, N Y- picture above.
